Can we say humanity has always been on an Emmaus journey?
All life, and all lives are the contemporary gospel story of the two disciples
and Who It was encountered them on the road leading away from the place of
loss, disappointment, seeming betrayal, and crushed expectations. We are immersed in the contemporary, living
reality of Gethsemane, and beyond. When
it comes to spiritual reflection we are always challenged to look for, and to
faith-fully face the beyond. I think I must have mentioned this
before, I have never been more excited about what today's healthy spirituality
has to offer for our nourishment and encouragement. It is wonder-full, awe-full to see that
today's realities are both hiding and revealing that which is
foundational to all Catholic Christian belief.
We are so, so lucky to have as our good shepherd Pope Francis. A man who has only one lung, and suffers from
sciatica, what a mercy-full presence he has been for today's human family. His Gospel driven , care-full vision
encompasses the totality not just the chosen few. Pope Francis sees the presence of The
Suffering One, in all of his sisters and brothers. He encourages all of us to leave behind the
familiar, that place of safety, and seek out the poor, hungry, naked, lost, alienated,
marginalized, rejected, and be the encouraging, transforming presence of
The Risen Christ on their Emmaus journey.
Before that can happen we have to realize and bring to consciousness our
own Emmaus encounter and subsequent graced journey.
